The Tale Of The Pie And The Patty-Pan Summary

One day a cat, by the name of Ribby, invites her dog-friend Duchess over for tea. Although Duchess accepts the invitation she really hopes that Ribby isn’t going to give her mouse pie to eat! She hates the thought of eating mouse pie so she decides to prepare her own ham and veal pie. She sneakily decides to swap the ham and veal pie with Ribby’s mouse pie when Ribby goes out to run errands.

When Duchess sees that Ribby isn’t at home, she quickly hurries over to Ribby’s house. Duchess doesn’t know that Ribby has two ovens, so she places her pie in Ribby’s top oven. She doesn’t realize that Ribby’s mouse pie is already in the lower oven. She quickly leaves before Ribby gets home.

At tea time, Duchess comes over to Ribby’s house and she greedily eats the pie which she believes is her own ham and veal pie. She is confused when she doesn’t see that patty-pan that she put inside her own pie and believes that she swallowed it by mistake. She starts to howl and Ribby quickly goes to fetch the magpie, Dr. Maggoty to help her.

While Ribby is out, Duchess finds her ham and veal pie still in the oven. She realizes that she must have been eating the mouse pie! She quickly removes her pie from the oven and hides it outside the back door hoping to sneak it back to her home after the tea party ends. Ruby and Dr. Maggoty arrive and after a lot of fuss Duchess leaves, pretending to go home. She doubles back and sees Dr. Maggoty and a couple of jackdaws eating her pie! She quickly runs home feeling very silly.

Later that day Ribby comes out to get a pail of water to wash up after tea and to her surprise she finds the pie dish smashed in her garden. She is amazed by what she sees and decides right then that the next time she wants to have a party she will invite her cousin Tabitha Twitchit instead!
