What Is Manifestation And How Does It Work?
Manifestation was popularized by “The Secret” which was a huge hit when it was published in 2006. It was written by Rhonda Byrne and sold over 35 million copies worldwide. The book and movie explored the law of attraction and how to use it in your life to attract or manifest the life you would like.
Basically, the law of attraction states that you can attract or manifest anything you would like into your life by visualizing yourself already having those things. It says that your thoughts are like a magnet and what you focus on will be attracted into your life. So, if you are always thinking negative thoughts, you will ultimately attract negative people and situations into your life. Likewise, if you think positive thoughts, you will attract positive people and situations into your life.
A lot of the law of attraction writings use Mark 11:24 as a reference for this idea:
The Power Of Your Thoughts
The average person thinks over 70,000 thoughts in one day! That is a hang of a lot of thinking! A lot of that thinking is done by our subconscious mind so it is important to try to become aware of exactly what you are thinking and the feelings associated with those thoughts. Becoming aware of your own thoughts is probably one of the most important things you can do if you would like to bring positive and lasting change into your life.

How To Stop Your Thoughts From Controlling Your Life
Albert Hobohm is an inspirational lecturer and speaker who, very sadly lost his mother at a young age. He fell into destructive behavior and addiction that began destroying his life. He eventually joined and lived in a Buddhist monastery where he learned to free his mind and take control of his thinking and his life. He learned how little control he had over his thoughts during this time and how this was affecting his life. He tells his story during a TEDx lecture discussing what he learned.
What Does Research Say About Writing Things Down?
Now, whether you believe in the theory behind The Secret or the law of attraction or not, there is plenty of evidence out there showing that writing down your goals and desires is incredibly powerful.
A study conducted by Dr. Gail Matthews, a Dominican University of California psychology professor, showed just how much your chances of manifesting something by writing it down increased by this one simple action. The study found that you are 42% more likely to achieve your goals simply by writing them down.
I was curious, does it matter if you physically write your goals and desires down with pen and paper or can you use your phone and tablet? I came across a really interesting study conducted by the University of Tokyo titled “Paper Notebooks vs. Mobile Devices: Brain Activation Differences During Memory Retrieval”. The study showed that physically writing down your goals using paper, pens, pencils or markers far outweighed the benefits of using a phone or tablet. They found that handwritten notes trigger increased brain activity and memory retrieval. At its conclusion, the study recommended using pen and paper rather than electronic devices to record important information.
What Does All This Have To Do With Manifesting Something By Writing It Down?
For me personally, I find that looking at what biblical verses say about manifesting your goals combined with specific scientific work such as the two above studies, makes the law of attraction seem a lot less like wishful thinking and new-age pseudoscience. And so, for me at least, it makes it a lot easier to see how it can work and it is a lot easier for me to believe it can.
So now, onto what you actually came here for…
How To Manifest Something By Writing It Down
Step 1: Choose Your Journal
This may seem silly but when you are wanting to manifest something by writing it down, you need to make sure that you enjoy the experience. So, choose a journal that you love! Choose pens, pencils, markers and any other stationery that will make your journaling an enjoyable, relaxing experience.
Step 2: Be Clear About What You Would Like To Manifest
This is something that I know quite a few people can struggle with… what do you want? What do you really want?
In the movie “The Secret: Dare To Dream”, there is a great line, “If you don’t know what you want, how can you ask for it?”. This line really made me think, a lot! How often do we want something good and wonderful in our lives but deep down (or maybe not so deep down) we don’t actually think we deserve it? So, we never ask. Or we ask, but don’t believe we are worthy of receiving the thing we want. Or ask, but for something less than what we really wish and hope for because we don’t believe that what we want is possible for us?
Matthew 7:7 (New International Version) says:
You need to take a good, hard look at your own self-limiting beliefs so that you can try to figure out what is holding you back. Do you have any negative thoughts about what you believe you deserve? Do you have any beliefs from your childhood that could be holding you back? For example, did your father/mother/teacher once tell you that you are completely hopeless and will never amount to anything, and deep down you actually believe it? Are these self-limiting thoughts holding you back and limiting what you believe you can do?
If so, it’s time to let all of that go! You are not the same person as you were yesterday. Today is the very best time to change your thinking and realize that you absolutely worthy of every good and wonderful thing out there!

Step 3: Get writing
In “The Secret”, Bob Proctor had a great way of kicking off your manifestation journey! He said that to help you get going, you should start your writing by using the sentence, “I am so happy and grateful now that…”. And you get to fill in the blank.
For example, if you have been hoping and praying for a new job, you could write something like: I am so happy and grateful now that I have my dream job in a company where my contribution is recognized and I am a valuable member of the team.
If you are hoping to manifest the money that you need, you can use one of Bob Proctor’s own affirmations:
I am so happy and grateful now that money is coming to me in increasing amounts, through multiple sources, on a continuous basis.Bob Proctor
Obviously, this is very personal for you! So, get creative and enjoy everything you are writing. Completely let go of those self-limiting thoughts. This should be a fun exercise where those self-limiting thoughts simply don’t exist!
Give it a try, you have nothing to lose! And as you go begin expanding on each of your thoughts by adding more and more detail.

Step 4: Meditate
Now that you have written everything that you are hoping and praying for, it is time to go through each one, and as you do, think about exactly how you will feel when they have become a reality. Imagine yourself being in that new job, having the money you need, and being with the person you dream of! Feel the feelings of being in exactly that moment. Feel the excitement, feel the happiness, feel the comfort, feel all the joy and contentment.
Just remember, it is very important that you don’t think about how you are going to reach the goal! Simply just concentrate on how you will feel once it is real.
Step 5: Routine & Repetition
Now that you have your goals written down and you have started to feel the excitement and joy of achieving your goals, it’s time to put a routine in place so that you can keep working on your mindset. Set time aside each day to work on your goals and desires. Some people find that they get great results from using this time to rewrite each of their goals. For example, put aside 10 to 15 minutes each morning as your morning manifestation session and rewrite each goal. As you do, feel the feelings of having each thing right now. This helps to shift your mindset and it will help you to have a more positive and happy day!
Some people have had great success with the 369 Manifestation Method – for 33 days you will write out your goals and desires 3 times in the morning, 6 times in the afternoon and 9 times at night.
Some simply use their time to close their eyes and visualize and feel the feelings of having what they would like. Some create a vision board to help them make visualization easier. It’s important to remember that you should always enjoy this time, and it should never be a chore.
Step 6: Relax
Don’t allow the manifestation process to become an obsession for you. Don’t obsess about it during your day. Just enjoy your daily life. However, try to keep positivity in your life so that you stay in that happy vibe. Of course, this isn’t always easy! For example, try to avoid negative people who drain you. Learn to say no if you need to. Avoid hostile or negative situations if you can.
You will find that once you have begun this journey, you will start attracting more positive people and more positive situations naturally so things will become easier.
A wise man once said, “If you go out one day and you meet an asshole, then you have truly met an asshole. However, if you go out one day and everyone you meet is an asshole, then you are the asshole!”
Step 7: Be proactive
If you are hoping and praying for a new job, you certainly aren’t going to manifest and achieve anything if you simply sit at home waiting and doing nothing. You need to be proactive. Get out there! Send out your CV. Network and speak to people.
And don’t allow yourself to become fixated on a specific outcome. For example, if you would like money for a new car, don’t become consumed by the idea that money is what you need. After all, you could win a car in a competition, or perhaps the company you work for could give you a company car. Don’t limit yourself by getting stuck on one idea. Be open to everything that comes your way and you might be surprised by all the good and wonderful things that come into your life!
