The Tale of Ginger and Pickles is a very cute Beatrix Potter children’s bedtime story that was published in 1909. When the book was originally published, it was published as a large-format book so it is said that Beatrix Potter spent a lot of time adding many more details to her illustrations.
In The Tale Of Ginger and Pickles, we also see many of the characters from her other books in the story. The Tale of Ginger and Pickles Summary
The Tale of Ginger and Pickles begins at a little village shop called “Ginger and Pickles”. It is a little shop that is just big enough for dogs, cats, rabbits and mice. It is also the shop where Lucinda and Jane, the dolls from The Tale of Two Bad Mice buy their groceries from. Although it is small, it sells just about everything that the little village could need.
The shop is owned by Ginger and Pickles. Ginger is a yellow tomcat and Pickles is a terrier dog. Beatrix Potter tells us that the rabbits in the village were always a bit afraid of Pickles while the mice were afraid of ginger. Ginger always asked Pickles to serve the mice because he said that “it made his mount water”. The two shopkeepers however did realize that eating their customers wouldn’t be a good idea! And besides, they didn’t want their customers to go to Tabitha Twitchit’s shop instead.
Tabitha’s shop was the only other shop in town but she didn’t give credit so the animals preferred to shop and Ginger and Pickles because they gave their customers unlimited credit.
Every day the customers would visit the shop and buy many different things but not once did they actually pay for anything. Instead, all their purchases were recorded in a little book with the understanding that they would pay later. And while the shop sold lots and lots of things, there wasn’t enough money coming in so Ginger and Pickles also had to eat their own goods.
At the beginning of the new year, the shopkeepers realized that they didn’t have any money to pay for Pickles’ dog license which he needed. They started adding up all the accounts and sent the bills out to their customers but still no money came in.
One day a policeman came to their shop. He was writing in his notebook as Ginger and Pickles panicked when they saw him there. When the policeman eventually left the shop, he left an envelope behind on the counter.
When they opened the envelope they saw that it was their rates and taxes!
They decided to close the shop there and then and they shuttered up the windows.
When the shop closed, Tabitha Twitchit immediately raised all the prices in her shop and she still wouldn’t give credit to her customers so it was very inconvenient for them.
One day Sally Henny Penny decided to reopen the shop and she sent out posters advertising her grand opening sale. Everyone was very excited and rushed to the opening day! But instead of giving credit, Sally Henny Penny insisted on being paid in cash even though she became flustered counting out the change.
