The World Of Peter Rabbit & Friends – The Tale Of The Flopsy Bunnies & Mrs Tittlemouse

The Tale Of The Flopsy Bunnies Summary

In The Tale Of The Flopsy Bunnies, Peter Rabbit and Benjamin Bunny are all grown up. Benjamin Bunny has married Peter’s sister, Flopsy and they have six very cute little bunnies of their own. Beatrix Potter doesn’t tell us the names of the bunnies and simply calls them “The Flopsy Bunnies”.

Because there are so many mouths to feed, there isn’t always enough for the family to eat. Sometimes Peter Rabbit helps them by giving them cabbages from the nursery garden that he keeps. However, sometimes Peter doesn’t have any cabbages to spare so the Flopsy Bunnies visit Mr. McGregor’s rubbish heap to look for food.

Usually, the rubbish heap has a lot of different things that the rabbits can scavenge for but on one particular day, they find overgrown lettuces that had shot into flower.

Benjamin Bunny and the little Flopsy bunnies eat until they can’t eat anything more. They are so full that they lie down and fall asleep. While they are sleeping in the warm sunshine, a little mouse by the name of Thomasina Tittlemouse scavenges for food in the rubbish heap around them.

She wakes Benjamin Bunny by mistake and the two of them begin talking. Just then they hear heavy footsteps above them and suddenly Mr. McGregory empties a sack of mowed grass on top of the sleeping Flopsy bunnies. Both Benjamin and Mrs. Tittlemouse hide quickly!

The little Flopsy bunnies don’t even wake up because they have eaten too much! Just then Mr. McGregor notices them and without waking them, he gently places them into his sack. He ties up the sack and leaves it on the wall while he quickly goes to put his lawn mowing machine away.

Just then Flopsy comes across the field wondering where her family is. She finds Benjamin and Mrs. Tittlemouse and they tell her what happened. They try to undo the knot on the sack but they can’t. Mrs. Tittlemouse however is very clever and she nibbles the bottom corner of the sack until it has a hole big enough for Benjamin and Flopsy to reach through.

Benjamin and Flopsy pull out the Flopsy Bunnies and pinch them to wake them up. They then place rotten vegetables and a couple of other things into the sack. They hide quietly waiting for Mr. McGregor to return.

When Mr. McGregor returns to the sack he doesn’t check what is inside and simply picks it up and carries it home. The Flopsy Bunnies follow him making sure they keep a safe distance. When he gets home and goes into the house they creep up to the window to listen.

Inside, Mr. McGregor brags to Mrs. McGregor about how he has managed to catch six rabbits! Mrs. McGregor is very surprised and feels the sack. The “rabbits” inside feel very hard and they are all different shapes. She says that they won’t be good for eating but that their skins would be perfect to line her cloak. Mr. McGregor shouts and declares that he would rather sell them and buy himself tobacco.

Mrs. McGregor unties the sack. and sticks her hand inside only to find some horrible rotten. She becomes very angry thinking that Mr. McGregor has tricked her on purpose! Mr. McGregor is also very angry and he throws one of the rotten vegetables out of the window hitting one of the Flopsy Bunnies!

Just then Benjamin Bunny and Flopsy decide that it is best so they leave the McGregors to their anger and their fighting.

The next Christmas the rabbits send Mrs. Tittlemouse a gift of rabbit wool to thank her for what she had done to help the Flopsy Bunnies. She decides to make a cloak and hood as well as a muff and mittens to keep herself warm when the weather is cold and miserable.
