Winnie The Pooh, or “Pooh” or “Pooh Bear” was created by the author Alan Alexander Milne (or A.A. Milne) in 1926 and was named after his son’s teddy bear. A.A. Milne’s son’s name? Christopher Robin Milne! As I’m sure you know, Christopher Robin is Winnie The Pooh’s best friend in the Winnie The Pooh bedtime stories and fairy tales. A.A. Milne also included the rest of his son’s toys in the stories – Piglet, Eeyore, Roo, Tigger and Kanga.

Winnie The Pooh was very popular when it was published for the first time in 1926 and has since then been translated into many languages. Walt Disney Studios bought the rights to the Winnie The Pooh stories in 1961 and since then has made quite a few Winnie The Pooh movies. They have also expanded on the series by making movies for other Winnie The Pooh characters including The Tigger Movie, Pooh’s Heffalump Movie and Piglet’s Big Movie.

Winnie The Pooh Q&A

Is Winnie The Pooh A Girl?

In A.A. Milne’s books, Pooh Bear is always referred to as “he” or “him”. In Disney’s movies, he is also always voiced by male voice actors. However, the bear after whom Pooh was named was in fact a girl bear.

Christopher Milne had named his toy bear after Winnie, a Canadian black bear he often saw at London Zoo, and Pooh, a swan they had encountered while on holiday.

The bear cub was purchased from a hunter for C$20 by Canadian Lieutenant Harry Colebourn in White River, Ontario, while en route to England during the First World War. He named the bear Winnie after his adopted hometown in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Winnie was surreptitiously brought to England with her owner, and gained unofficial recognition as The Fort Garry Horse regimental mascot.

Colebourn left Winnie at the London Zoo while he and his unit were in France; after the war she was officially donated to the zoo, as she had become a much-loved attraction there.

How Old Is Winnie The Pooh?

In the book, “House At Pooh Corner”, we are told that Pooh Bear was a birthday gift given to Christopher Robin when he turned one year old. Christopher Robin was born on the 21st of August 1920 so Pooh’s birthday would be the 21st of August 1921. This would make Pooh Bear 101 years old in 2022!

When Is Winnie The Pooh’s Birthday?

There are two trains of thought on when Pooh’s birthday is. The most popular being the 21st August 1921 as mentioned above.

However, some people prefer to use the date on which Pooh was introduced to the world for the first time. If you think this is a more appropriate date then Pooh’s birthday would be the 24th of December 1925. This is the date that Winnie The Pooh’s first story was published in the Evening News Newspaper. What a wonderful Christmas Eve gift to the world!
